Talking Autocross 8-12-07

Getting so pumped for the weekend. My brother is coming up and we're going to another autocross at the abandoned army air field i spoke of last time. i'll bring my camera for sure this time (forgot last time). and we're running twin civics, haha. my bro finally finished his suspension, painted his wheels graphite, replaced the radiator, got new tires. i'm curious to see how his lack of power steering will affect his performance, but it's his first time so we'll see.

here's pics of his car. http://hondashowoff.com/profile.php?id=7799

Anyway i'm just amped and thought i'd get this thread started and update on sunday.

Pretty fun event today. finally broke into the 60's with a 69 sec run which is pretty good for being on stock street radials. I was very pleased with the car. I think i'm going to try and get a set of Falken Azenis within the next couple weeks and hopefully have them ready to run on the August 26th event or at minimum the Sept 30th event. Anyway here are a few shots i took of the weekend. Once my brother sends me his and the photos are posted up on the FLR-SCCA website i'll update with more pics.

tire rotation/brake bleeding....

fuelin up for the day at 6:45am

boredom at 7am on interstate 90

again more pics to follow

Whats that stuff like? Is it more about speed or handling? I have wondered how my sol might do in something like that. I am not all that fast but it does handle well.

It's definately more about handling in my opinion. I mean my little civic with the right tire setup and maybe a rear sway bar could lay down a time that is on par with high horsepower cars such as WRXs. Right now i'm limited mainly because of my tires. You should give it a try, it's addicting

also, the thing i was most worried about, my body roll, seems to be all but gone. a rear sway bar and that thing won't move at all.

for reference, this is when i was on the tokico springs.

I will have to look around for something going on in my area. I have really good tires I think, not sure how it would handle at the limit. I think I need to tweek my ride height a bit still.

What are you looking into for tires? I recently upgraded to BF Goodrich G-Force Sports and I'm pretty impressed with them. Great tires for a pretty decent price.

And yeah, I'm really wanting an aftermarket sway bar now too. With my suspension, tower bars, tie bar, h-brace, and the new tires my car feels really tight. A nice fat sway bar would finish it off nicely. I'm thinking I'll probably get that over the winter and then try my luck at auto-cross next summer.

right now i'm looking at getting a set of falken azenis since they seem to be the tire of choice amongst the hardcore autocrossers. I'd only run them during autocross events since the tread life on them is very short. i've heard that if you run them daily they will be completely worn out after 1 season. i'm crossing my fingers that i can get a set and mounted to a set of 14" ex steelies by the 26th.

http://www.falkentire.com/main.htm

under tires click tuner, then click rt-615

basically a street legal race tire, hehe

also, be careful autocrossing with your automatic. i'm pretty sure that's what did in mine. The instructor told me to leave the car in 2nd and i think i burned up the transmission in the process.

Yeah I've heard great things about the Azenis as well. How much does a set typically go for? I've actually got a set of 15" steelies that I could sell you, but I'm pretty sure I want to keep them as winter wheels. My tires are supposedly alright in the snow but I don't really want to take any chances.

And yeah, the transmission is on my list actually. I'm thinking I probably am going to end up keeping this car for a few more years, so I'm probably going to go ahead and swap it to manual at some point, maybe gather the parts over the winter.

By the way, are those your apartments in the back ground? Or are they campus housing? Either way, looks like a really nice place to live.

Edit: Also, do you think your new springs have settled any since you put them on?

The best price i've found thus far is $60 per tire for the 195/60/14 size. I'm thinking i'll go with that size unless i can find a dirt cheap set of 15" wheels.

yeah that's my apartment, tad more expensive than i'd like, but absolutely love the apartment.

and finally, yea the springs have settled a bit. When i first installed them, i was about the same ride height as my brother with his skunk2 springs. but now, i'm about 3/4 to an inch lower.

Yeah the apartment looks really really nice. I paid about $85 a piece for my G-Force Sports, but then again they are for a 15" wheel. $60 a piece really isn't bad. That's the nice thing about performance tires, they're usually actually cheaper than a lot of all season tires.

I see steelies all the time on Craigslist and eBay, so I'm sure you can come up with something. Maybe post a wanted ad on Craigslist. I'm sure there's plenty of people like me out there who bought a set of wheels and now have their stockers just laying around taking up space in the garage.
