Well when i was looking at the civic I was going to buy it had the same problem, it ran great burnt some oil and produced some black smoke... with mine it was the head gasket, it was either warped or busted but i never got the chance to figure out for sure what it was. and it is, yes, most likely caused by the burning oil, but correct me if im wrong.

Yup out of the muffler will go the burnt oil. Probably the rings, a little oil gets past the piston and burns up on combustion, creating the black smoke.

There's special "lubes" that claim to reduce smoke, never used them so I can't verify. If the rings are worn, you'll need to new ones.

sometimes Lucas can reduce the amount od oil getting by the rings, cuz it thicker, but i wouldn't recomend it....keep in mind that lot's of Honda's smoke during shifts, and mainly because oil pressure raises witht he rpm's...it's not necessarily a bad thing, but know that it is a problem, and probably best to attack it now before it gets too bad...

well i don't get smoke when i shift even under hard accelleration. i'd say your rings are probably worn down too much. b16 time! woohoo! seriously though, i don't think there is anothe way to burn oil unless it's coming out of your valve cover gasket and geting burnt on the block but that wouldn't explain smoke from your exhaust so yeah, it's your rings.

Clyde004 beat me to it, Lucas can be used to Reduce some smoking. I use that stuff every single time I change my Motor Oil = 3 Quarts of 10/30w and 1 Quart of Lucas. It works perfect even if your car has a Million miles. It doesn't burn as much, but yea man, might be your Rings. No Big worry's though. You can take care of that after, (Waaaaaaaaay after). Don't take my word for it though.

head gasket would be if he was burning coolant more likely. if it was that he'd see white smoke.

yeah i realize that. however if the headgasket was bad, he'd definately have white smoke because of the way the honda cooling system works. since he said he doesn't have white smoke the head gasket is less likely the problem. besides that he would have also described heater and overheating problems if it the head gasket was bad.
